Procrastination, Self Care and the Art of Taking the First Step

For months I kept putting off getting my Barbados ID card. I’d convinced myself it would be this long complicated process, the kind that would take up half the day and probably leave me frustrated. So I delayed it, again and again.
When I finally went, it turned out to be the complete opposite. The staff were lovely, everything ran smoothly, and I was finished in less than 30 minutes. I left wondering why on earth I hadn’t just done it sooner.
It got me thinking about how often we do this in other parts of life. We build things up in our minds until they feel much bigger than they are. We tell ourselves it’ll be too hard, too much effort, or not the right time, so we keep putting it off. Sometimes we get in our own way without even realising.
Maybe it’s the same with starting back exercising, joining a yoga class, or trying something creative like therapeutic art. The idea of it can feel like too much until you actually take that first small step and realise it’s not so bad after all. It might even feel good.
That small action — showing up, trying something new — can shift everything. It’s funny how something that’s sat on your to-do list for months can suddenly feel easy once you finally begin.
So if you’ve been thinking about joining one of my classes or booking a one-to-one session but keep putting it off, maybe this is your sign. You might surprise yourself with how simple, and how nice, it feels to finally do the thing you’ve been meaning to do all along.
